Does a watermark hurt Instagram Reels reach?
No — not your own. Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, said in October 2024 that watermarking a Reel with your own logo is fine. What Instagram tries not to recommend is a Reel carrying another app's watermark, such as a TikTok logo.

What exactly did Instagram say?
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, answered the question directly in October 2024: a creator's own logo on a Reel is fine, and the thing Instagram avoids recommending is a Reel with a logo from another app.
“If you watermark a Reel with your own logo, will that affect its reach? The answer is no, that's actually good to go. What we try to do is not recommend Reels with logos from other apps, but if it's your own logo, don't worry about it.”
That distinction is the whole answer: what matters is whose watermark it is. Your own is fine; another app's is what Instagram recommends less.
Why is a TikTok logo treated differently?
Because it marks the video as recycled from a competing app. In February 2021 Instagram said it makes Reels that visibly contain another app's logo or watermark less discoverable, which is why a clip saved through TikTok's Save video button is a poor thing to upload to Reels.
The practical fix is ordering. Export the clean video from your editor, add your own mark, then upload it to each platform separately. You keep the credit, and the Reel carries no other app's watermark for Instagram to recommend less.
So what should you actually put on a Reel?
Your own handle, small, readable, and out of the way of the subject. If you want it to survive a crop, repeat it across the frame at low opacity instead of parking it in one corner. Both are your own branding, which is what Instagram said is fine.
- Use your own name or @handle — not another platform's watermark.
- Keep opacity low enough that the footage still reads.
- Avoid the outer edge of the frame; that is the first thing a reposter crops.
- Moving and repeated marks are the hardest for removal tools — though no watermark is unremovable.
- Add the mark before uploading, so every downloaded copy carries it.
What this answer does not cover
It covers Instagram's own recommendation behaviour, as described by Instagram, and nothing else. It is not a statement about TikTok's or YouTube's ranking, and platform behaviour can change.
If reach on a specific post drops, your own watermark is an unlikely cause — by Instagram's own account, a creator's own logo or handle on a Reel does not affect reach.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram penalise watermarks?
Not your own. Instagram says it recommends Reels with another app's watermark less often; a creator's own logo or handle is fine, per Adam Mosseri in October 2024.
Does a TikTok watermark reduce Reels reach?
Instagram says it tries not to recommend Reels carrying logos from other apps, and a TikTok watermark is exactly that. Upload a clean export and add your own mark instead.
Where should the watermark go on a Reel?
Off the subject and away from the outer edge, at an opacity low enough to read through. Tiling it across the frame is the version that survives a crop.
What about TikTok and YouTube Shorts?
This page covers Instagram only: the statements it cites are Instagram's, and they say nothing about how TikTok or YouTube rank videos.
Put your own mark on it
Creatag builds the mark from your name, @handle or a built-in icon and burns it into the exported video — animated or tiled, on your iPhone, before you upload.
